Back in the 1950s when public television in Minnesota was still a dream, educational television had a champion in the state legislature in Elmer L. Anderson. In 1960, the republican was elected governor of our state. A year later, KTCA made a special program with Andersen, in which the governor showed off his impressive private collection of Minnesota history books. Here’s a clip.

The veto is not a tool that Governor Pawlenty has used often. But Jesse Ventura was a pro with vetoes. And back in 2002, legislator Tim Pawlenty was involved in a rare Minnesota veto override. Take a look.
Speaker David Jennings in 1986 (05/20/09)
On March 18,1986 Republican House Speaker David Jennings adjourned a chaotic house, sending lawmakers home without completing work on the budget. Speaker Jennings appeared on "Almanac" later that week to defend his actions.
Paul Wellstone in 1981 (05/13/09)
Paul Wellstone cut his political teeth working the rural power line issue in the late 1970s. In 1981 Carleton College professor Wellstone appeared on Channel 2 to talk about energy issues and what he called "the first battle in America's energy war." Note the professor's happening hair style.
Found Footage - Jack Kemp (05/06/09)
Jack Kemp died this week of cancer at 73. In the late 80's he ran for President and appeared on Almanac. In this clip from September 25, 1987 Kemp talked about Joe Biden's recent withdrawal from the race due to charges of plagiarism.
Dr. King in 1967 (04/29/09)
On April 27, 1967 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave an anti-war speech at the U of M's East Campus. Here's a clip from that speech, the final one King was to give in Minnesota
