Shocking the World (07/02/08)

Few Minnesotans will ever forget election night 1998. Weeks earlier Jesse Ventura was third in the polls ... but that night he pulled off a remarkable upset in a tight three-person race and uttered the famous quote, "We shocked the world!" The after-shocks kept on coming. Here's a look at how the Jesse phenomenon came to be.

Mondale's Fjord (06/24/08)

In 1979, Walter Mondale traveled to Mundahl, Norway ... the home of his ancestors. Tagging along on the trip was KTCA. Together with Norwegian State Television, Channel 2 produced a documentary carrying the title — and we're not kidding you — Walter Mondale: There's a Fjord in Your Past. Until recently, this program was lost. But we recently uncovered it.

First Governors Debate (06/17/08)

Rudy Perpich was the governor when Almanac went on the air in 1984 ... and in 1986 he was the first governor to participate in an Almanac debate. Here's a classic debate exchange between Perpich and challenger Cal Ludeman from the campaign of 1986.

Wellstone Arrest (06/10/08)

The early 1980s in Minnesota were noted for a simmering farm crisis. In 1984 a KTCA crew prepared a report for the MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour on farm foreclosures in Stearns County. A group of activists there was challenging local bankers. The report featured a young protestor who would go on to be a national political figure. In this his first national TV coverage, Carleton College professor Paul Wellstone caused quite a stir.

Minnesota's Twin Peaks? (06/03/08)

The 1990 election will be long remembered for its antics. Often best remembered today by the upset senate win of Paul Wellstone, the election also featured a governor's race that can only be termed bizarre. Just two weeks before the election, republican nominee Jon Grunseth faced accusations that he had gone swimming nude with teenage girls. The political swirl that resulted made Almanac staffers think of the hit TV show at the time "Twin Peaks." Take a look.

Arne's Farewell (05/27/08)

Arne Carlson succeeded Rudy Perpich in office and would serve two full terms. Carlson was known as a battler, but he showed a different side in his touching farewell speech to lawmakers in the spring of 1998. We thought it was worth another look.

Jesse in Japan (05/20/08)

Governor Ventura was big in Japan. His inaugural was broadcast live there, where he was well known as a pro wrestler. So it's not surprising that Jesse's first international trade mission was to Japan. KTCA was there with him — and it was surreal from beginning to end.

1980 Defeat (05/13/08)

In 1980 the Carter-Mondale team suffered a stunning defeat at the polls. That fall, KTCA scored a scoop when the station landed Mondale's first sit-down TV interview after the election. Here are some highlights from reporter Mary Stuckey's wide-ranging exchange with Mondale.

McCarthy's Last Stand (05/06/08)

Former Senator Eugene McCarthy and ex-governor Harold Stassen were once leading candidates for their party's presidential nomination. And both of them spent several decades running repeated campaigns after their time was past. McCarthy ran for president first in 1968 and again in 1976, 1988 and 1992. During his final campaign, a feisty McCarthy appeared on Almanac.

1990 Debate (04/23/08)

Just days after the Jon Grunseth scandal broke in the 1990 campaign, Arne Carlson entered the race as a third option to Grunseth and Rudy Perpich. It was a race that featured just one televised governor's debate and it took place in the KTCA studios. It would turn out to be the most watched debate in Channel 2 history.
