Arne Carlson Tussles with Child (08/28/07)

You got to admit it's not everyday when a child accuses a governor of "messing with his face." But that's what happened back in 1997 when Governor Arne Carlson visited a Twin Cities daycare center. The Governor's playful pat on the head was misinterpreted by a tyke and it resulted in a very humorous exchange. Kudos to then-Almanac political reporter Mike Mulcahy for having fun with it all. This clip originally aired on Almanac on February 28, 1997.

Farm Chat with JFK (08/08/07)

In 1960, presidential candidate John F. Kennedy sat down with Governor Orville Freeman and Senator Hubert H. Humphrey in the KTCA studios to film this political spot. Freeman later served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under presidents Kennedy and Johnson.

LeRoy Neiman Rides (08/01/07)

LeRoy Neiman sitting on top of the Capitol Quadriga! You know, somehow we don't think that the Capitol Historic Preservation folks would any longer allow an artist to sit on our Capitol's famed golden horses. But back in the late 1970's when the city of St. Paul commissioned a piece of art by its famed native son, the wildly popular artist was given wide latitude. This clip is from a half-hour documentary that Twin Cities Public Television did on Neiman some time before 1980. In it he talks about St. Paul (of Biblical fame) and his hometown. And of course, look for those rare shots of Neiman sitting on the Capitol horses!

Remembering Lady Bird (06/27/07)

Back in 1964, she accompanied her husband as he campaigned for President in Minnesota. During a speech, Lady Bird Johnson went out of her way to thank the DFL women, especially the wives of Minnesota's leading DFL officials: Jane Freeman, Muriel Humphrey and Abigail McCarthy. It's a charming clip.

Opening I-35W and I-35E (05/22/07)

Ah ... let's all yearn for a minute for those heady days of the '60s and '70s when Minnesotans built their way out of traffic problems. Here are some rare clips — courtesy again of KSTP-TV — showing the ribbon-cutting ceremonies for I-35W and I-35E. Note how spiffy our governors looked.

Playing in the Big Leagues (05/16/07)

A new Twins stadium is in the news and that makes it a perfect opportunity to share some great old clips of Met Stadium. The Twins played their first major league game in Bloomington in April of 1961. Thanks to the KSTP news archive, we have a great clip of Governor Elmer L. Andersen throwing out the first ball at that first game. Notice how the newsies tell the Governor to do it again so they could get a better shot ... note, too, how Twins Owner Cal Griffith can't ever seem to look in the direction of the cameras.

Arne Carlson Was the Veto King (05/09/07)

He cast more gubernatorial vetoes than anyone in our state's history. Back in 1998 in this long-lost clip, Governor Carlson had some fun with gubernatorial candidate Norm Coleman and a big veto pen. And we mean it. This is the biggest veto pen ever seen around these parts. Note another candidate for governor seated in the audience at the end of the clip.

More Campaign Classics (03/26/07)

Here are two video gems from the 1978 campaign ... long remembered for the DFL turning over power to the Republicans (then known as Independent Republicans). Featured in this clip are two campaign commercials, each two minutes long! The first ad features U.S. Senate victor David Durenberger. The second profiles former-governor-turned-senator Wendy Anderson who lost his race that year to Rudy Boschwitz.

Rudy Perpich's State of the State Address 1985 (01/12/07)

Mid-January is State of the State time in Minnesota. We dug into the vaults and found a clip from the January 9, 1985 address by Governor Rudy Perpich. This is early Perpich ... note that he had not yet started dying his hair.
