Elmer L. Andersen

Elmer's Library (07/25/08)

Back in the 1950s when public television in Minnesota was still a dream, educational television had a champion in the state legislature in Elmer L. Anderson. In 1960, the republican was elected governor of our state. A year later, KTCA made a special program with Andersen, in which the governor showed off his impressive private collection of Minnesota history books. Here’s a clip.

Jesse Ventura One-on-One (05/16/08)

The former governor sat down with just one local TV reporter this week and it was Almanac's Mary Lahammer. The interview was classic Ventura.

2002 to 2006 (12/28/07)

Paul Wellstone explains his opposition to the Iraq War Resolution in his first debate with Norm Coleman. Tim Pawlenty shares a defining moment from his childhood. Past governors discuss Pawlenty's potential and offer words of advice. Amy Klobuchar tells Mark Kennedy she wants a debate her mother would be proud of. And a campaigning Governor Pawlenty pledges his commitment to Minnesota.

1957 to 1974 (12/28/07)

Elmer L. Andersen shows off his collection of history books in a rare kinescope recording. Orville Freeman and Hubert Humphrey film a campaign commercial with presidential candidate John F. Kennedy. Senator Humphrey reminisces about his blooming romance with Muriel. And Wendell Andersen inaugurates the opening of Orchestra Hall.

Rainy Lake Series Continues (10/05/07)

We head back up to Rainy Lake with Mary Lahammer. This week we will take a look at Minnesota’s only national park, Voyageurs National Park, and its water, land and wildlife, not to mention the geology that features some of the oldest visible rock on the planet.

8 Governors (09/20/07)

EIGHT living former governors. That's what Minnesota had back in 1986. And in May of that year all eight were in one place at one time at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. We had a camera there and recorded the historic event. Yeah, only seven of the governors are featured talking in this clip. C. Elmer Anderson was always a bit shy.

Playing in the Big Leagues (05/16/07)

A new Twins stadium is in the news and that makes it a perfect opportunity to share some great old clips of Met Stadium. The Twins played their first major league game in Bloomington in April of 1961. Thanks to the KSTP news archive, we have a great clip of Governor Elmer L. Andersen throwing out the first ball at that first game. Notice how the newsies tell the Governor to do it again so they could get a better shot ... note, too, how Twins Owner Cal Griffith can't ever seem to look in the direction of the cameras.
