PAUL — On Friday, October 16, The Science Museum of Minnesota and Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) will welcome acclaimed actor, writer and director Alan Alda to the Twin Cities as he presents a new PBS series, The Human Spark. Aside from being a six-time Emmy-winning actor (best-known as M*A*S*H’s Hawkeye Pierce), Mr. Alda is also a bestselling author and a lifelong science buff. He served as host for the PBS series Scientific American Frontiers for eleven years and now he returns to PBS with The Human Spark, a three-part series which asks the question, "What makes us human?" PAUL — Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) is proud to announce the appointment of its President and CEO, Jim Pagliarini, to the PBS Board of Directors. A system-wide leader for the past three decades, this will be Mr. Pagliarini's fourth term on the Board. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of PBS from 1992-1998 and again in 2006, holding positions on the Board’s Executive Committee, Nominating Committee, and as Vice Chair of the Board’s Finance Committee. He has also served on numerous national task forces that explored, refined, and redefined the business of public television. Read Full Press Release [pdf] ----------- September 1, 2009 Twin Cities Public Television Presents Will Steger at Preview of Ken Burns' National Parks: America's Best Idea Renowned polar explorer and educator will speak at Ted Mann Concert Hall ST. PAUL — Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) is proud to present Will Steger at the University of Minnesota's Ted Mann Concert Hall on Wednesday, September 16, 2009. Steger will be on hand at this special preview event of Ken Burns' new documentary series, National Parks: America's Best Idea; a six-part, 12-hour series which traces the birth of the national park idea in the mid-1800s and follows its evolution for nearly 150 years. As an expert on environmental issues, an educator and explorer, Steger is uniquely suited to present the film. He will discuss his experiences in over four decades of polar exploration and how making economically and environmentally smart choices can make a real difference. PAUL — Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) is pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara Van Loenen as the station’s new Vice President of Finance and Business Administration. Ms. Van Loenen has over 20 years experience working in a variety of financial and administrative positions at Best Buy. She worked there from the company's infancy and was part of the team who grew Best Buy into the multi-billion dollar enterprise it is today. She has extensive experience with all aspects of finance and accounting, from entering the debits and credits herself to working with the leadership of the organization in strategy, business development and board and shareholder relations. At tpt, Ms.Van Loenen will oversee Finance and Accounting, Engineering and IT, and Building Services. Read Full Press Release [pdf] ----------- July 28, 2009 Twin Cities Public Television Acknowledges Support for Creation of Minnesota Video Vault New website is a treasure trove of Minnesota arts, history and politics available ST. PAUL — Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) gratefully acknowledges the support of several local and national entities in the creation of the Minnesota Video Vault (MVV). The Bush Foundation, the Saint Paul Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-4) were all instrumental over the past three years in the development and launch of this important resource. A project of tpt, MVV is a web-based, on-demand video service that contains hundreds of hours of documentaries, performances, interviews and speeches from the vaults of tpt and other regional organizations. The Vault currently contains over 700 programs, with new material being added every month. Read Full Press Release [pdf] ----------- May 8, 2009 KSMQ and Twin Cities Public Television Sign Cooperative Master Control Agreement Agreement reduces costs and improves efficiencies for Minnesota Public Television Stations ST. PAUL — Public television stations KSMQ (Austin, Minnesota) and Twin Cities Public Television (tpt, ST. PAUL, Minnesota) have signed a three- year Cooperative Master Control Agreement designed to reduce costs for KSMQ and improve efficiencies for both stations. The two stations are independent organizations and the new agreement preserves the full organizational independence and operational flexibility of KSMQ, in order for it to best serve its local community. Under the terms of the agreement, tpt will be providing – via an existing State of Minnesota fiber network – a broadcast-ready signal comprised of programs and promotional elements produced by KSMQ, programs acquired by KSMQ, and PBS programs which both KSMQ and tpt include in their schedules. The PBS programs then need only be recorded and stored once to serve both stations. Read Full Press Release [pdf] ----------- April 7, 2009 Twin Cities Public Television’s Depression: Out of the Shadows wins Peabody AwardST. PAUL— Depression: Out of the Shadows, the 2008 documentary co-produced by Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) and WGBH Boston, has won a Peabody award, the world's oldest prize in electronic media. The yearly competition is an international affair, and honors distinguished achievement in a variety of fields, from radio to television to the web. Depression: Out of the Shadows originally aired in May 2008 to great critical acclaim; The Wall Street Journal called it, "A treasure for its information and explanation, this documentary is that rare thing – powerful television that can also work some good in the world." The documentary was written, produced and directed by Larkin McPhee, who focused on raising awareness and eliminating the stigma surrounding this prevalent and often deadly disease. Read Full Press Release [pdf] ----------- March 27, 2009 Twin Cities Public Television Thanks Unions for Voluntarily Wage Roll Back IBEW and NABET members overwhelmingly support measure ST. PAUL— Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) is pleased to announce that the employees in both of the company's unions have voluntarily agreed to roll back their wages in support of tpt's efforts to address the current economic climate. Twin Cities Public Television has two unions, NABET and IBEW; tpt's contracts with those unions gave union employees a pay raise in September of 2008. In December, tpt enacted a station-wide salary freeze; however that did not impact union employees. Read Full Press Release [pdf] ----------- November 19, 2008 TWIN CITIES PUBLIC TELEVISION LAUNCHES NEW FAMILY OF SERVICES Station announces channel line-up and other services for the digital TV era. ST. PAUL — Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) today announced a new family of services to serve its audiences in the era of digital television and beyond. First is the new line-up of digital channels that it will have in place – beginning at midnight on the morning of February 18, 2009. The channels are:
Channels 2-1 and 2-2 will broadcast from the station’s KTCA transmitter, while channels 2-3 and 2-4 will broadcast from the station’s KTCI transmitter. Thanks to new technical capabilities made possible by digital TV, all of the channels will be designated as “channel 2-x”. PAUL — In his most recent television campaign ad, Representative Erik Paulsen (R), a candidate in the Third District Congressional race, uses footage from Twin Cities Public Television’s (tpt) public affairs show, Almanac. The footage is of his opponent, Ashwin Madia’s (D) appearance on Almanac on October 10, 2008. This ad has appeared on local television outlets, Rep. Paulsen’s website and is posted on YouTube. As a non-partisan public television station, tpt has never consented to use of our copyrighted materials by any political candidate or party. In previous campaigns, we have requested that candidates – Democrats, Independents and Republicans – cease use of similar material, and all have complied. Read Full Press Release [pdf] ----------- October 27, 2008 Twin cities public television documentary on SPCO 2007 European tour wins upper midwest emmy for best cultural documentary Saint Paul, MN, October 27, 2008 – On Saturday, October 25th Twin Cities Public Television’s (tpt) documentary Budapest to Berlin: On Tour with the SPCO won the Upper Midwest Emmy for Best Cultural Documentary. For the documentary tpt followed The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra on their January 2007 tour to Budapest, Vienna, Zagreb, Maribor Slovenia, Warsaw and Berlin. The film gives a behind-the-scenes look at an orchestra on tour, including two musicians who return to their home towns; the SPCO’s first concert at Vienna’s famed Musikverein; a musician paying respects in Budapest at the resting place of composer Béla Bartók; and the operational challenges inherent in a six-city tour. PAUL — Twin Cities Public Television (tpt)’s Almanac will host the fourth debate among Minnesota’s major candidates for U.S. Senate on Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m. (CST). Hosts Cathy Wurzer and Eric Eskola will throw out the stopwatches and podiums and have a lively conversation with Senator Norm Coleman and challengers Dean Barkley and Al Franken. In addition to the live broadcast of Almanac on tpt 2 and other public television stations throughout the state, the debate will be broadcast live nationwide on C-SPAN 2. Ms. Cackler was previously the Acting Vice President of Philanthropic Funding at tpt and has now been named to the position permanently. Mr. Giles is a leader in both the American Bar Association and the Minnesota State Bar Association in the areas of public law and ethics. His previous position was as General Counsel for the Minneapolis School District, a position he held since 1999.
