A Minnesota writer’s love of the prairie is expressed in a poetic essay.
Writer Bill Holm was decidedly vertical –closer to seven feet tall than six—but in his poetic essay “Horizontal Grandeur” he tells us that “as a mountain is high a prairie is wide.” Holm knows the subject matter well. He was born in Minneota, Minnesota in prairie country. Holm was the subject of a 1990 Twin Cities PBS special. These were the documentary’s closing words and images.

Narrative poetry. Spoken word. Lyric poetry accompanied by music. Poetry that rhymes and poetry that slants, bends and winds. During National Poetry Month, TPT presents a poem from the archives every day: 30 Poets, 30 Days. Some of the featured poets are Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners. Most call Minnesota home. Every one of them represents a journey in language and culture.
