One of the easiest ways to support the programs you love on tpt is to donate your car, van or truck. Join the thousands viewers who have made this hassle-free decision. If you have a vehicle that you no longer need, donating it to tpt is easier than going through the trouble of fixing and selling it yourself, and less stressful than haggling with a dealer over the trade-in value.

We accept almost all vehicles, from “cream puffs” to “junkers”.

Twin Cities Public Television uses the profit from the sale of your car to support our programming and services.

Donating your vehicle is easy! You can:

  • fill out the form above to start the process, or

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I contact someone to donate my car?
You can contact us at the studios of tpt in Saint Paul, MN by phone, email or by filling out our  online donation form. Our phone number is: (651) 229-1530. Our email address is: cars@tpt.org.

Is my vehicle eligible for this donation program?
We accept most vehicles, running or not. We may not accept some older vehicles or very high mileage vehicles whose value would not offset the cost of towing. In addition:

  • You must have a clear title to the vehicle; that is, it must be unencumbered by a lien.
  • We must be able to tow your vehicle.

To start the donation process, please complete and submit our online donation form or call us toll free at (651) 229-1530 or 1-888-229-1530.

When will my vehicle be picked up?
Vehicles are picked up on whatever day works best of you. Even on weekends if necessary! We do not drive the vehicles. Vehicles are generally towed. You do not need to be present at the time of pickup if proper arrangements are made.

How should I prepare my vehicle?

  • Please remove all personal possession from your car. We do not need the registration or insurance certificate. All four tires must be inflated. The vehicle should be intact with no major parts missing.
  • The vehicle must be in a location that is accessible to a tow truck.

In what geographic areas do you pick up donated vehicles?
We will generally pick up vehicles that are located in our broadcast coverage area. If you are outside tpt's broadcast area. Whether we pick up your car from some of these areas depends on whether the value of the car will offset the increased towing costs. Give us a call or fill out the online form and we'll let you know if we are interested.

What happens to my vehicle after I donate it?
Twin Cities Public Television does not sell your vehicle directly since we are not a dealer. Cars With Heart, our partner in vehicle donations will pick up your vehicle and give you a receipt. Each vehicle is evaluated and sent to a vehicle auction, specialty wholesaler or retailer, recycler or otherwise sold. A portion of the money collected from the sale of your vehicle goes directly to Twin Cities Public Television.

What if I don't have a title?
Generally, a title is required for vehicle donations. In some cases we may be able to accept a vehicle without physical possession of the title. Please call (651) 229-1530 for more information.

What type of receipt do I receive?
Your receipt will list the make, model, year, etc of the vehicle you donated when the vehicle is picked up. Then we will send you a second receipt as soon as the car is sold, letting you know the exact sale price. That amount is your tax deduction.

How much of a tax deduction could I receive?
As of January 2005, you may deduct the full sale price of your car. This greatly simplifies the process for you, because you no longer have to research and estimate the fair market value of the vehicle, saving you both time and the risk of overstating the value on your tax return.

When you donate your car to tpt, you'll get a receipt at the time we pick up the vehicle. Then we will send you a second receipt as soon as the car is sold, letting you know the exact sale price. That amount is your tax deduction.

I have questions that aren't covered here-what should I do?
You can call (651) 229-1530 during regular business hours (9 - 5pm, Monday through Friday) for more answers.
