Writing/Essay Journal
Anthony Caponi has filled his 60-acre backyard with sculpture and created a public place where art and nature enhance one another. He learned about art through experience, not formal instruction, and encourages the 17,000 visitors to explore the park on their own and to ask questions. Write about a teacher you had who gave you the opportunity to be creative. How did he or she help you see things in a new way without telling you what to think? What kind of project did you end up making?
Activity
Find a piece of public art (sculpture, mural, fountain or sign). Look at it carefully. If it’s something you pass by often, try to see it in a new way. Notice how it fits into its surroundings. Try to find out who made it and why. Now create a design for a piece of public art. Where would you put it and what would it be?
