Writing/Essay/Journal
After careful study and training in Ojibwe traditional beading, Greg Bellanger feels able to help create an expanded future for an art form that began in the 1800s. He continues to use floral imagery, but adds new colors and exotic plants. In his store he not only shares materials, but also his knowledge that we can only grow when we know where we came from. Write about a family or cultural tradition. See if you can learn more by asking your elders about important activities or stories that help define who you are as part of your community.
Activity
Now expand on your traditions. If certain foods are important in your family, try a new twist on how they are made. If celebrations help define your culture, look at them in a new way and add something meaningful to you. If you learn about family stories, turn them into a book for a younger child. Whatever you do, SHARE your unique interpretations.
