Writing/Essay/Journal
One of Jan Estep’s many projects involved making a map of the area where naturalist and artist Everett Ruess disappeared. It includes not only the geography of the area, but text and pictures that
capture who he was and why he might have vanished.
Write a description of a populated place as if you were an anthropologist (a person who studies people in the context of their culture). Describe not only the physical location and its geography, but
also landmarks, customs, important events and beliefs of the people who live there.
Activity
Now make a map of the place you described. If it is a city, show the streets. If it is in the country, show the topography. Then, based on what you have already written, add symbols that tell more. How can you show the culture of the people who live there? Be sure to include a map key that explains all of your symbols.
