Writing/Essay/Journal
Laura Muessig’s job at the Weisman Art Museum is to keep track of and protect all the works of art that are in the gallery’s possession. This includes a lot more than what is shown at one time to the public. Muessig must choose between keeping things safe and giving the public accessibility. How much of art is about people experiencing the work? How much of it is about the process and the act of just creating the work? Can you be considered an “artist” if no one ever sees your work?
Activity
Do some research into what an art registrar does. How are paintings and other works of art maintained? What are the optimum conditions for storing or transporting art? Talk in groups of 2-4 about the importance of knowing the history of a piece of art?
