Writing/Essay/Journal
Liza Sylvestre progressively lost her hearing and learned to perceive the world with her other senses. She believes this loss has led to a greater sensitivity in her other senses, which allows her to create the art she does. Write about which of your senses you would lose if you had to lose one: Sight, Hearing, Taste, Feel or Smell.
Activity
Liza uses many different tools to create the beauty she says exists between control and spontaneity. She’ll ink wash her paper and then do detailed drawings with micron pens. She’ll use straws to push paint around with her breath.
Make five paintings of an object using a different tool each time as your “brush” (chop stick, cloth, rock, spray bottle, straw, cardboard, a plant, a brush, etc.). Do the different textures affect the feeling you have about the object?
