Writing/Essay/Journal
Through the MacPhail music partnership, Ascension School student William has tried piano, violin and now cello. Identify an activity you enjoy and branch out. For example, if you like soccer, try dance; if you like Go Fish, try Old Maid.
Write about your experience. What are some of the similarities and differences between the two activities? Do you think you’ll stick with your new activity, and perhaps even branch out further, or stick with your original activity?

Ascension School Principal Dorwatha Woods asserts, “Music is math.” One of many ways to demonstrate this relationship is through fractions.
The basic types of music notes are whole notes, half notes and quarter notes. When there are 4 beats per measure, a whole note takes up all 4 beats of the measure (4/4, or 1); a half notes takes up 2 of the 4 beats (2/4, or 1/2); and a quarter note takes up 1 of the 4 beats (1/4). Print out this simple sheet music for Mary Had A Little Lamb and write the corresponding fraction—1, 1/2 or 1/4—above each note. Have your teacher help you clap out the rhythm if you need additional help.
