Kathleen Olsen, principle second violin, enjoys playing with the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra because she says it is a chance to “do something collectively that I can’t do alone… that is what community is about.” How do you define community? Where are places in your life where you experience community? What is the importance of community to you? How do the artists use their art form to create something totally unique and different? What do you think would be most challenging about this form of art?

Activity
Create a collective piece of performance art or music. Each person must be doing something different, individually, but all of the parts must fit together. Notice how the feeling of working together as a team or community changes from the first time you put the pieces together to when you have practiced many times.
