Writing/Essay/Journal
Monica Reede’s current artwork combines layers of etched and drawn on Plexiglas using the imagery of rope. She likes how her use of commonplace imagery has led to metaphorical meaning that is open to multiple interpretations, reflecting that “what’s on the surface isn’t necessarily the whole story.” Select a common, everyday object and make a list of the possible metaphors for that object. Do you believe it is possible to create something beautiful out of something that is typically considered ordinary?
Activity
Using several sheets of transparent paper and Monica’s work as a guide, create your own layered piece of art. Compare your method and subject matter with those of some of your classmates.
