Objectives: Rapper and lyricist Prof not only writes his own lyrics, he also creates his own music. Using the app Garageband, create your own music then record a version “scatting” or “lyrically flowing” over it.
Tools/Resources: Pen and paper, iPad with Garageband, microphone for iPad (if possible).
Activity
1) Watch the segment and discuss:
a. What is the creative process Prof uses when he makes a new song?
b. Elicit the group to say “think, create, record.”
2) Create a song.
a. First think of a story behind an important life experience, favorite memory, theme of favorite memory, or some element of day-to-day life.
b. Using smart instruments in Garageband, create a song.
i. Start off with smart drums.
ii. After song is created, examine and brainstorm, “how does this song make me feel? What images come to mind? Which of the above topics best fits with this song?”
iii. Brainstorm, when ready, and add a vocal track to the musical track.
3) Write up a one paragraph informational description to accompany the song explaining the story and how the music made you feel.
4) Participate in a gallery walk with headphones, reading the informational paragraph and leaving feedback via post-it notes.
