Writing/Essay/Journal
Aparna and Ranee Ramaswamy talk about the connection between the two of them, how they are different sides of the same person, or soul mates, yet they are two very different, complementary personalities. Is there anyone in your life you feel this way about? Someone who is different from you but still feels very close to you? Could you work this closely with someone in your family, a parent or grandparent? How do the artists bring themselves, their history, to their art? How do the artists feel about their art? How much of a role does it play in their lives?
Activity
Bharatanatyam is a classical Indian dance form that is very complex and technical with many specific movements that represent elements of Indian culture or spirituality. As Ranee puts it, “It’s not just movement, there is more to it.” By using these specific movements, the dance company can create new and different stories and dances. Create your own series of movements that represent something, and then use them to tell a story through dance.
