The Evolution of the Twin Cities Pride Guide

June 23, 2017

Former Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau and former Minneapolis Police Department, now U.S. Marshal, Sharon Lubinski, are LGBTQ pioneers. They helped change the dynamic between cops and the queer community in Minneapolis, but the history of this relationship is complicated.

In the early and mid 70s, being out and visible came with risks, including threats of harassment from law enforcement. So the early Twin Cities Gay Pride organizers created a pride guide that could be quickly disposed of in case participants were hassled. Fortunately, Jean Tretter kept some of these items. These historic Pride Guides are now preserved at the Tretter Collection in GLBT Studies at the University of Minnesota Libraries.
