Chris Mars’ artwork often leaves viewers with a sense of discomfort, but he also hopes it also leaves them asking themselves to question their judgment. His experience growing up with a schizophrenic brother helped him to be more understanding of people who are “different” from the norm.

Write about a time you were afraid of a person who was different from you. Were you able to eventually understand them and their differences?

Chris Mars started his artistic career as the drummer for The Replacements, then found his true calling in painting. Most recently, he started exploring video as a medium.

Take an existing piece of your own art and try to get the same message across in a new medium. (It took Chris 20 years to master painting, so don’t worry if it doesn’t come naturally right away!)
