Writing/Essay/Journal
Book artist Jody Williams created a series of small dioramas and a tiny book about invertebrates. She said that she really enjoys the constraints of working on such a small scale – it really forces her to slow down and be careful. “Being 1/16th inch off is like being off by a mile.” Do you enjoy precision detail? Are you the type of person who wants every single detail to be exactly right? Or are you more of a “good enough” person who is willing to accept less than perfect? Also, how is the concept of scale addressed in this piece?
Activity
Create your own miniature work of art. What do you notice about working in a small scale that is different from working on an average or large scale project?
