Writing/Essay/Journal
Executive Director Sheila Smith says that, “Minnesota Citizens for the Arts exists because the need to advocate for the arts never stops.” Without public support for the arts, artists are less likely to create work.
Write a poem to depict what a world without art might look like.
Activity
Sheila describes several of the initiatives of the MCA, including the Minnesota Percent for Art in Public Places program, which requires that any new buildings that are have public art written into the bill.
Locate and visit a piece of public art in your community, whether it’s a mural in your school, a sculpture near your bus stop, or a work connected with a well-known public building. Think about how that piece of art changes the way you interact with that space? Would the space be better or worse without it? Be prepared to share with your class.
