Writing/Essay/Journal
In “Stealing Sugar from The Castle,” Robert Bly compares himself to an ant that finds joy in stealing one grain of sugar – a metaphor that reveals the joy he finds in everyday experiences. Write about some ordinary thing you do often and which brings you great joy.
Activity
In “Keeping Our Small Boat Afloat” Robert Bly says:
Each of us deserves to be forgiven, if only for
Our persistence in keeping our small boat afloat
When so many have gone down in the storm.
Think of a way to forgive someone who has made a mistake that hurt you. Find examples of someone who is merciful in your religious tradition, in your cultural folktales, in history or among your family and friends. Now, using what you’ve learned from the models, find a way to forgive.
